Belsize Park ran in 18 tries and racked up 106 points away at Imperial Medicals on Saturday, storming to a fifth successive league victory which took them to the top of the table in Herts/Middlesex Division One.

Brent Hoekstra touched down six times, while Seb Dunnett crossed the try-line three times, and Mark Liebling, Ryan Harper and Fred House all scored twice.

Captain Tom House got in on the act and Richard Wilson and Nathan Ladd also registered tries, while BP did not concede a single point in reply.

Head coach Andy Barrington said: “I haven’t seen such good tries in amateur rugby as some of those that we scored at the weekend. It was an excellent performance, albeit against a seriously underpowered side – but you can only play what’s in front of you.”

Skipper Tom House, who has taken the armband in the absence of the injured Jonny Jones, added: “I’m delighted that the boys are making it so easy for me to step in as captain.

“It was a clinical performance, our set piece was fantastic and the finishing was first-class. It was a superb result to send us to the top of the league.”

Belsize were playing into the sun and the wind in the first half but they took an early lead as Kiwi forwards Harper and George Hazlett drew the youthful Medics defence and created space for winger Liebling, who embarked on a mazy run to score from 50 metres out.

Imperial threatened from the restart, getting within five metres of the BP try-line – but Tom House tore the ball loose and committed the opposing fly-half before freeing Dunnett, who ran 80m to touch down.

The pattern for the game was quickly established, as Belsize battered their hosts in the tight before unleashing the pace of Guy Parker, Liebling and Hoekstra, who was in devastating form.

The wingers were aided by in-perfect box kicks from Ben Parker and Nathan Ladd in each half respectively, underlining the red-hot battle for the No9 shirt.

Changes were made at half-time but there was no respite for the Medics, who had to contend with the conditions in the second period.

Harper had scored two tries in the first half and he was replaced by Fred House, who touched down twice himself – and the promising Ollie Budd came into the front row, while Ladd moved to scrum-half.

Tom House ensured that BP picked up where they had left off after the break, collecting the ball outside the 22, outpacing the opposing winger and fending off the full-back to register his name on the growing list of try-scorers – and the visitors went on to utterly dominate possession before reaching the 100-point mark shortly before the final whistle.

Meanwhile, it was a successful day for the club’s other sides as well. BP’s second XV beat Roslyn Park’s fourth team 73-10, and the Bulls were 24-21 winners against Quintin’s second string, while the Buffaloes triumphed 27-22 against Chiswick’s fourth team.
