Saracens head into Saturday’s world record match against Harlequins at Wembley Stadium having secured the first silverware of the rugby season.

The Allianz Park club lifted the LV=Cup trophy for the first time on Sunday, beating Exeter Chiefs thanks to Ben Spencer’s penalty with the final kick of the game.

Three second-half tries had given the Hendon outfit a 20-6 lead, but Exeter hit back with two late tries and it took a cool head from Spencer to secure a 23-20 victory and win the cup.

“We showed what this team has been about all year. This is a special group that never stops fighting and has always found a way,” said coach Joe Shaw.

“We did that again despite creating a few hurdles for ourselves. I thought that in the last 10 minutes the way we battled to keep going just shows what this club is all about.

“Exeter are very similar to us and clawed it back and I’m just pleased we had that little bit more to win in the end.”

After seeing the rest of the Saracens squad celebrating in the changing room after the game, Shaw hopes the result will serve as added impetus for the rest of the season.

“This isn’t the first time that the rest of the squad have supported this group,” he added. “They’ve been there throughout the games and it just shows the character of the club and what we are all about.

“We just have to push on now in the Premiership and Europe – it’s just been a great day.”

Saracens’ season continues at Wembley Stadium on Saturday when a crowd in excess of 84,000 – a world record for a club rugby match – is expected for the clash against Harlequins.

Saracens will welcome back England internationals Richard Wigglesworth, Mako Vunipola and his brother Billy after Six Nations duty, while second row Jim Hamilton is also available for selection after playing for Scotland.
