Wingate & Finchley were knocked out of the Middlesex Charity Cup, losing out to Broadfields United in a penalty shoot-out.

The sides were inseparable at 1-1, after a game of two halves which saw the Blues dominate the all-important closing stages without converting a winning goal.

Wingate fielded a young side made up of the successful Under-18 squad, with Keir Dickson and Tommy Tejan-Sie included as they begin to return from lengthy injuries.

Luke Sheldrick made the game’s first save, low down to his right from Broadfields front man Michael Murray‬’s powerful effort.

And it took until midway through the first half for Wingate to have their opening effort when a marauding run from centre-back Jake Eales saw him arrive at the edge of the area but he was denied by the keeper‬ with his low drive.

‪On the half-hour mark Broadfields took the lead when Paul Summers found the bottom left corner after a slick build-up of one-touch passing cut open the spine of the Wingate rearguard.

The goal sparked Wingate into life and they started to play with more intent. Ned Clarke fired on target from close range but he was denied by a desperate block from a defender.

Ben Pattie had tried a few efforts from range in the first half without success, but he levelled the scores on 50 minutes with a trademark unstoppable strike into the top right corner with his left foot from 20 yards.

The match was now end-to-end with little to separate the teams and Broadfields’ Faux-James sent a tame effort from the edge of the area which was easily gathered by Sheldrick.

The Blues dominated the last 20 minutes and tricky winger Emmanuel Melford-Rowe struck his own left-footed effort which was well saved low to the keeper’s right.

Pattie crossed the ball low to Clarke at the far post but he dragged his effort wide, and had another chance from close range but could not quite connect with the goal gaping.

The game fizzled out into a draw which brought the lottery of penalties, with Broadfield scoring all of their kicks as Wingate missed two.
