Camden councillor Tulip Siddiq has been selected as Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Hampstead and Kilburn.

The seat, which is currently held by Glenda Jackson, is tipped to be one of the most hotly contested during the 2015 general election.

Ms Siddiq, who represents Regent’s Park ward, was selected by local Labour party members yesterday following a vote held at the Mazenod Social Club in Kilburn.

She beat fellow Camden councillor Sally Gimson and Hackney councillor Sophie Linden.

In January, Oscar-winning actress Ms Jackson, who has been the MP for the constituency since 1992, confirmed she would not be standing for the marginal seat again.

She won in 2010 with a majority of just 42 votes – the narrowest margin in the country.

The Conservatives announced Hampstead councillor Simon Marcus as their candidate in January.
