Sadiq Khan denied he was putting politics above compassion as he visited Camden for the first time since the stabbings in Kentish Town in February.

The mayor of London’s visit this afternoon was part of a Labour campaign event, with hours to go until polls open at 10am tomorrow morning.

Mr Khan is yet to meet the families of Sadaq Aadam, and Abdikarim Hassan, who died during a night of violence on February 20.

He said: “Whenever any bereaved family asks to meet with me, I will. It’s a case of understanding how process works. It can be a case of that being inappropriate for politicians going in.

“I’ve met many families and been to many funerals over the last two years since I became mayor.

“I’m a father of two teenage children.

“There but for the grace of god, it could be any one of us. We need to work together to tackle this issue.”

He also said his visit wasn’t a sign the party was concerned about Labour’s chances at the polls.

Earlier in the day he visited Westminster, a council that on a good night could swing to Labour.

He added: “Camden Labour isn’t complacent. They’re going from door-to-door to win votes.

“I’m going across London to make sure we don’t stop until 10pm tomorrow.”
