Hampstead flat bought by Polish WW2 émigré for £3,500 now on the market for £2.25million

The entire house on Heath Drive, NW3, was bought in 1951 for £3,500. Now, 65 years later, the two-bedroom ground floor flat alone is on the market for £2.25million, 642 times the original price.
This is a staggering increase on its own, but even accounting for inflation the property is still worth 20 times what it previously sold for.
This shows the sheer scale of Hampstead house price rises as £3,500 in 1951 would actually be worth £108,282 today, a mere five per cent of the current asking price.
Vendor Clive Langer’s parents bought the whole house and lived in the ground floor flat with their two sons, initially renting out the two upstairs apartments before selling them in the 1960s.
Langer’s father was a Polish Jew who was the only member of his family to escape the Nazis. He settled in London during the War where he met the East End girl who would be his wife for the next six decades.
“My dad was Jewish and escaped Poland at the beginning of the War. He helped people to escape on the route to Africa.
“He fought for England in Africa but in Tobruck in Libya he got jaundice and was sent to England to recover. He volunteered to join the RAF there.
“That’s how he met my mum because he was stationed in England,” says Langer.
After a stint studying economics at the LSE, he set up a metal smelting business and bought the Hampstead flat with his wife to start a family – his first son was born in 1951 followed by Clive in 1954.
“It was a great flat when we were children because of the large garden,” says Langer. “We were local kids until we went off and did our thing.”
Langer’s “thing” is music production, which includes a longstanding relationship with other “local kids” Madness, as well as collaborations with Elvis Costello, Blur and David Bowie.
The property would also be ideal for an older couple thanks to its ground floor situation and off-street parking in the shared garage and large driveway, or someone looking to put their individual stamp on a property that hasn’t been modernised for more than 60 years.
