A 66-year-old woman was rushed to hospital with suspected chest injuries after being involved in a collision with a motorbike in Crouch End.

The woman was struck by the vehicle at 5pm on Friday, as she crossed the road opposite the Virgin Active health centre in Broadway Parade, Tottenham Lane.

Russell Geraghty, who is a sales and marketing rep at the gym, ran to her aid.

He used to work as a police officer in East London so was unfazed by the upsetting crash scene.

He said: "Everyone in the street was panicking but I'd dealt with this sort of incident when I was in the police so knew what to do and to stay calm.

"My main concern was keeping the lady warm so that she didn't go into shock.

"So I grabbed some towels from the gym and covered her in them.

"She wanted to stand up but was complaining about having a sore neck and back so I knew she had to stay still."

Mr Geraghty, 28, said that an off-duty anaesthetist administered first aid until the paramedics arrived.

Police closed off Topsfield Parade at the junction with the Clock Tower and diverted southbound traffic along Elder Avenue.

The injured woman was taken by ambulance to the Whittington Hospital.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at just after 5pm on Friday, February 13, to reports of a road traffic collision on Broadway Parade.

"We sent two single responders in cars and one ambulance crew.

"A 66-year-old female was taken to Whittington hospital as a priority with chest injuries."

Tottenham Lane re-opened at 6pm. The woman is believed to be in a stable condition.
