Wingate & Finchley are the early top scorers in the Ryman League Premier Division after finding the net seven times in their two opening matches of the season.

The Blues kicked off with an unfortunate 4-3 home defeat, but that was followed by a convincing 4-1 win at Hampton and Richmond on Tuesday night.

Daniel Nielsen’s side were left bemoaning lady luck after losing a seven-goal thriller against Leiston on Saturday, hitting the woodwork twice and having two penalty shouts turned down.

Rob Laney opened the scoring with a header after eight minutes but the visitors drew level when Gareth Heath volleyed home. And, although Scott Shulton put W&F ahead again, Joe Francis volleyed into the top corner to make it 2-2.

Leiston then went 3-2 up when Craig Parker arrived late into the box to volley home a rebound from a looping cross that wasn’t cleared – and Heath grabbed his second before David Knight cut the deficit back to one goal in injury time.

Three days later the Blues started brightly at H&R and took the lead on 14 minutes through Ola Sogbanmu after good work down the left wing by Karl Oliyide.

The hosts equalised four minutes later from the penalty spot as the teams went in level at the break.

But Nielsen rallied his troops at half-time and got the response he was looking for through Shulton, who sent a curling effort into the top right corner from 18 yards, leaving keeper Warren Carter helpless.

Blues substitute Leon Fisher created the third goal when his superb angled through ball from the right released Knight, who lobbed the stranded keeper.

And Knight then struck again five minutes from time, slotting home comfortably in a one-on-one after being played in by Laney’s selfless square pass.
