Josh Kennett scored the winner for the second weekend running as Wingate & Finchley defeated Bury Town in the Ryman League Premier Division on Saturday.

The match had an end-of-season atmosphere, with Kennett’s strike on 14 minutes sealing a 1-0 win.

Tommy Tejan-Sie was the architect, beating his man on the left touchline and drilling the ball low to Ola Sogbanmu. His header was parried by goalkeeper Marcus Garnham but fell for Kennet to smash a shot into the roof of the net.

Spencer McCall tried his luck from 18 yards with a shot straight at Garnham, before Bury’s Billy Clark suffered an injury and, after a lengthy delay, was taken to hospital.

If anything, the second half was worse than the first, with both sides struggling for momentum. Nnamdo Nwashuku went down under a challenge from Ahmet Rifat but Bury’s claims for a penalty were waved away by the referee.

Bury gave Wingate a nervy moment in the closing stages as Jack Brand’s shot took a deflection off Marc Weatherstone, but Bobby Smith kept his effort out.

Wingate followed up that victory with an exact reversal of the scoreline at Billericay Town on Tuesday night.

The home side piled on the early pressure. Bobby Smith saved from Ryan Scott, before a volley from Geoff Mitchell was cleared off the line, and the same player was off-target with another effort shortly afterwards.

The decisive moment in the match came on the hour-mark. Rifat was adjudged to have clambered over a breaking striker, and from the resulting penalty Richard Halle sent Smith the wrong way to open the scoring.

Smith prevented further damage by smothering an effort from Mitchell, but in the closing stages it was Wingate pushing forward and causing problems.

Tejan-Sie crossed to the far post for Rifat, who headed over the bar. Rifat then set up Adam Bolle, but his diving header was straight at the keeper.

Wingate & Fingate will hold their annual community day at the end of the month.

The event takes place on Saturday March 29, the same day Wingate’s first team entertain AFC Hornchurch.

The event is a fundraiser for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice. Based in Barnet, the hospice provides practical and emotional support to life-limited and life-threatened children and their families.

In addition to a ‘pay what you want’ entry incentive, a number of activities will be planned including kids’ coaching, penalty shoot-outs and a fundraising raffle.
