Wingate & Finchley missed the chance to go level on points with the leaders for the second weekend in a row after losing 2-1 away against struggling VCD Athletic on Saturday.
Rob Laney gave the Blues the lead after just six minutes but they conceded an equaliser just before the hour-mark and, although Wingate then had a number of good chances to regain the lead, it was the hosts who struck the winning goal with a penalty, while Mark Goodman was sent off for the foul.
Leon Solomon crossed for Laney, who headed past Max Huxter to open the scoring – and Alfie Bartram then had a shot blocked six yards out while Billy Healey hit the post before Laney tested Huxter, who went on to make a double save from Barney and Healey.
Barney hit the woodwork again and Huxter saved the follow-up while Dan Brown hit the bar from 30 yards – yet VCD suddenly levelled through Donovan Simmonds.
Wingate attacked again and Huxter denied Laney, who then hit the post – but again the hosts delivered a sucker punch at the other end. Goodman tangled with Simmonds in the box, conceding a penalty and getting a red card, and Lheureux Menga netted the spot-kick.
