The memorial is set on raised ground with a retaining semi-circular surround. The former oak wood atop the wall rotted away and was replaced with a cheaper wood some years ago, now itself deteriorating. It was hoped this would be replaced with coping in similar stone to match the obelisk, better able to survive the ravages of time and more dignified for such a theme.
The monument was placed to call to memory those people of Hampstead who gave their lives for their country in two great wars.
Contrary to your news item, is is very many years since there was a civic remembrance service held there, the Town Hall preferring the Euston station railway staff's memorial, which is also due for a clean-up.
