The first two results, both from Sunderland, have indicated a decisive 9.9 per cent swing towards the Conservatives - though the seats were retained by Labour with much-reduced majorities.
The third result from Sunderland, Sunderland Central, where the Tories hoped to perform well, saw Julie Elliott hold the seat for Labour and the swing towards the Conservatives was only 4.8 per cent, leaving Labour feeling slightly happier about the evening's prospects.
