THE COUNTRY'S first eco-friendly bollards are to be installed by Westminster Council.
In a bid to cut its carbon footprint the council is replacing 2,000 illuminated bollards with greener solar-powered versions from June. The scheme will save 210 tonnes of carbon a year - enough to power 200 homes for a year.
Director of transportation Martin Low said: "Most people think illuminated bollards are there just to make the streets safer but in fact they could also become another tool in our plans to tackle climate change.
"Small actions can make a big difference to the environment and this proposed initiative is one of many which make Westminster Council a leading 'green authority'."
The £1million scheme will save £132,000 on energy use and maintenance costs every year - so it will take less than eight years for the savings to pay for the project.
Westminster has pledged to reduce its CO2 emissions by 20 per cent by 2020.
