Welcome Syrian Families (WSF) is looking for a property in Camden for two years that will be affordable on benefits. This could be a two-bedroom property on £1,200 a month, a three-bedroom property on £1,300 or a four-bedroom property at £1,400.

Group member Emily Woof said they came together after being concerned about families and children in the war-torn country.

“We heard about the scheme and felt quite strongly that we wanted to do something to help. People’s lives, and their children’s lives have been turned upside down by the situation there,” she said.

They are also looking for volunteers to befriend the family, and help them settle into their new home.

The group has already grown locally with people pledging their support and getting involved. Emily said she didn’t expect the reception. “It surprised some of us that it seemed to strike a chord. Most of us have children and I think that is one of the reasons.”

WSF is having a “mulled wine and leafletting” event on Saturday between 1.30pm and 4pm at All Hallows’ Church in Savernake Road, for people who are interested.
