A WATER leak in West Hampstead caused chaos today.

The problem in West End Lane began on Monday night, with repairs resuming the next morning.

A section of West End Lane was closed off to traffic while repair works took place last night and this morning.

The misery for nearby traders was compounded by further work on an unrelated gas leak on the same street - although it is believed that the road will remain open while the National Grid carries out repairs.

Traders in the area are already suffering from reduced business because of ongoing weekend closures of the jubilee line.

A spokesman for Thames Water said: "Our engineers worked overnight to repair a seven-inch water main which burst under West End Lane late yesterday. We're now rebuilding the road, which we're planning to reopen tomorrow (Wed) afternoon. We're sorry for the disruption to road-users, residents and local businesses."

A spokesman for National Grid said: "We are currently working to identify the source. Once that has been done we will be able to make the relevant repairs.
