COUNCILLORS will come under pressure tomorrow night to throw out proposals to bulldoze the Victorian mansion Athlone House, on the edge of Hampstead Heath.

Developers Athlone House Limited want to demolish the 1870 landmark on Hampstead Lane and replace it with a new eight bedroom house complete with underground parking and staff quarters.

They have always claimed Athlone House is too dilapidated to be restored.

But Camden Council has been bombarded with objections from over 500 residents and numerous conservation groups, including the Heath and Hampstead Society, who are demanding the current house is restored to its former glory.
