As residents of the Chalcots estate demand an independent fire safety report into conditions inside the tower blocks, they invite the Ham&High inside to take a look.

This comes as external cladding on the towers, in Adelaide Road, was yesterday declared unsafe by the Department for Communities and Local Government who said it must be removed.

The blocks were evacuated in June after it was revealed that the cladding was similar to that blamed for helping to spread the blaze during the tragic Grenfell Tower fire.

Camden had then said that they would wait for the results of a second round of tests before removing the cladding.

Following these tests, the Department for Communities and Local Government confirmed that the combination of cladding and rock wool used at The Chalcots did not meet current building regulations and “present a significant fire hazard”.

Chalcots residents have set up a crowdfunding page to pay for an independent building inspection amid continued fears over the towers’ fire safety.

While Camden Council says it has completed all the other works that necessitated the emergency evacuation on June 23, many residents feel the work has been done “shoddily” and that the blocks remain unsafe. This view was corroborated by independent fire safety expert Arnold Tarling, who slammed the condition of the buildings and said the building inspectors– who signed off the works were ‘on another planet’

But Camden Council leader Georgia Gould said: “Following the Government’s announcement about new cladding test results, Camden Council Leader Georgia Gould has made clear that Camden remains committed to removing and replacing outer cladding panels from the Chalcots.

She said internal fire safety work had been signed off by inspectors from both Westminster and Lambeth councils and that residents were safe to return.
