Two pensioners have become the latest victims of bogus callers posing as tradesmen to steal from Highgate homes.

Three con artists pretending to be from Thames Water entered an elderly man’s home in Hillcrest two weeks ago after they told the victim that they were working in the flat below and needed to check his water pressure.

They then distracted the victim and stole money. The victim demanded to see their identification and the workers said they would have to get it from their van. But the suspects did not return.

The next day an elderly woman, of Milton Park, also let a bogus caller posing as a Thames Water worker into her home. He told her to empty the cupboard under her sink so he could check the pipes. But while she did, the suspect stole her handbag.

Haringey police advise residents to always check a caller’s ID by ringing Haringey Council on 020 8489 1000 unless they have prearranged an appointment.
