Tulip Siddiq, MP for Hampstead and Kilburn, has called a meeting with Camden Council leaders to ask about safety checks for Chalcots residents, following the horrific fire at Grenfell Towers.

At the Chalcots Estate in Swiss Cottage yesterday, which includes five high rise blocks with 711 flats in total, residents voiced their fears that a similar fire to the one in Kensington could happen again – this time at their home.

Ms Siddiq has written to council leaders to check on fire safety of the cladding on the Swiss Cottage blocks, which was fitted by Rydon – the same company as the one that fitted the Glenfell Towers in West London.

Ms Siddiq said: “Since the horrific incident at Grenfell, a number of constituents living in the Chalcots Estate and other similar buildings, have contacted me with their concerns about the potential for similar fire risks in their flats.

“I have written to the Leaders of both Brent and Camden Council to ensure that all tower blocks in our area have had their safeguards checked, including the fire alarms and cladding.

“I will meet with the leaders of both councils later today to offer my help to them and to ensure everything necessary is being done.

“My first priority as MP is the safety of my constituents.

“As such, ensuring lines of communication over the coming days will be vital.

“My team and I have hand-delivered letters to hundreds of residents to keep them informed of the work being done to ensure the safety of the blocks, and we will continue to keep up our efforts until residents have the certainty that they need.”

In 2006 Sussex firm Rydon started work on a PFI contract worth £66million to complete refurbishment and maintenance work at Camden’s Chalcots Estate, in Adelaide Road, which included external cladding to five tower blocks.

As previously reported, Camden council leader Georgia Gould wrote to tenants and leaseholders to reassure them extra checks would be made on properties in the light of the Grenfell tragedy.

Robert Bond, CEO, of Rydon Group, said in statement: “Rydon completed a partial refurbishment of Grenfell Towerin the summer of 2016 for Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation on behalf of the council. The project met all required building regulations and handover took place when the completion notice was issued by the department of building control, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

“We are working with the relevant authorities and emergency services and fully support their enquiries into the causes of this fire.”
