Top five things to do in Hampstead and Highgate this week

1. Sunday - Sunday Papers Live

A new way to make sense of the Sunday papers, Cecil Sharp House in Regent’s Park Road, Primrose Hill, hosts a day of talks, walks, performances and food that aim to bring the broadsheets to life.

With the hall transformed to resemble an oversized living room, a star-studded lineup of top political, business, culture and sport experts will be taking you through all the news and features.

Paul Mason, former economics editor of Newsnight and now cultural and digital editor of Channel 4 News, will be guiding the audience through the World News pages, joined by New York-based journalist Melissa Gira Grant and world-renowned artist and chaos theorist Gregory Sams.

Spoken word group Chill Pill give their own take on what’s happening in the UK, while the business pages are given a grilling by former Dragon’s Den star and CEO of School for Startups Doug Richard.

The Culture section sees an energetic breakdown by the two-time UK Beatbox champion Reeps One and World Loopstation Champion Shlomo.

They will be joined by the critically acclaimed Sivu who got his big break after his debut track – released on the internet – went viral.

Food and Drink is covered by culinary researcher Sam Bompass, named as “one of the 15 people who will define the future of arts in Britain”, while Style is given the Royal treatment by Anna Reynolds, curator of paintings for the Royal Collection.

Gardening, Science, Technology and Travel are also covered by experts in their field.

Food will be available all day with a reservation only long-table Sunday roast cooked by “eco chef” Tom Hunt.

With it running from 12noon to 11pm, visitors are invited to bring their slippers, come and go as they please or join in the organised walks in the open spaces of Primrose Hill.

2. Thursday - Actress Anna Chancellor

Actress Anna Chancellor becomes the latest well-known figure to take part in the Lifeline series of talks at Burgh House in New End Square, Hampstead.

From ‘Duckface’ in Four Weddings And A Funeral and Caroline Bingley in Pride and Prejudice to the BBC’s The Hour, Chancellor has had starring roles in some of Britain’s best-loved film and TV productions.

Fresh from appearing in Noël Coward’s Private Lives in the West End, the actress will talk about her background and career. Starts at 7.30pm.

3. Sunday - Hampstead Dogs Film Screening

The charity All Dogs Matter hosts a fundraising screening of Four Tails – a short film about the people who walk their dogs on Hampstead Heath.

With well-known faces promised to attend, the Everyman Cinema in Holly Bush Vale, Hampstead, will be rolling out the red carpet.

There will be tea and talks after the film.

4. Wednesday - Comedy Night

A night of comedy at the Princess of Wales pub in Chalcot Road, Primrose Hill.

Shortlisted for the BBC Comedy Awards last year and a regular on BBC Radio One, Dane Baptiste will be joining the multi-award winning Damien Clark and the “young genius” Glen Moore.

5. Wednesday - Gardeners’ Question Time

The friends of Burgh House present a panel of garden experts to help Hampstead’s green-fingered residents prepare their gardens for the spring and summer.

Chaired by Howard Shannon (producer of BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time), the panel includes Mike Jackson (Camden Garden Centre), Ruth Pavey (gardening columnist for the Ham&High), Stephen Smith (of the Garden Historians) and Steven Crisp (head gardener at Winfield House in Regent’s Park).

Wine, nibbles and a gardening-themed raffle will also be on offer. Starts at 7.30pm. Tickets £12 (£10 concs).
