A 90-year-old volunteer has been presented with an unsung hero award in recognition of more than 50 years of selfless service to a charity.
Joyce Saffron, of Frognal Lane, Hampstead, has volunteering for Jewish Care, a health and social care charity serving the Jewish Community, for more than half a century.
Along with her late husband Tony, she founded a kosher meals on wheels project in Stepney – the first kosher service of its kind – in 1957. Although she now lives in Hampstead, she has continued to help out at the Stepney Jewish Day Centre, organising entertainment, outings and the annual Chanukah lunch.
She said: “Volunteering is a way of life for me. I love speaking to people and helping them when I can.” She was presented with an award recognising her achievements at a lunch at the Grosvenor Hotel in Park Lane.”
