Swiss Cottage Post Office will move into a nearby WH Smith branch at the end of this month, it was announced.

Protesters fighting the closure of the Finchley Road branch have said WH Smith, also in Finchley Road, is too small and there will not be enough space for customers.

Swiss Cottage Crown Post Office is one of 16 main branches across the UK that will be relocated to WH Smith branches. It will close on Wednesday, February 26 at 5.30pm and will transfer to the franchised branch the next day.

All eight members of staff, who have a combined total of 185 years experience, have declined to transfer to the WH Smith branch, according to spokesman Gary Watt of the Communication Workers Union. They will now be redeployed to other branches or leave the Post Office as part of its voluntary redundancy scheme.

The campaign to save the Swiss Cottage branch from closure gained the support of Labour parliamentary candidate for Hampstead and Kilburn, Cllr Tulip Siddiq, and Andrew Dismore, London Assembly member for Barnet and Camden. A petition against the closure gained more than 1,500 signatures.
