Organisers of a major street festival in Swiss Cottage are appealing to local musicians to get involved and have the chance to play in front of up to 20,000 people.

A Perfect Day festival returns on September 21 after a five-year break and will celebrate the £24million redevelopment of Swiss Cottage School Development and Research Centre, in Avenue Road.

It will take place over a 320m stretch of Avenue Road, including the school site, and will see the street closed to traffic between Adelaide Road and Elsworthy Road for the day.

Festival organisers have so far signed up three main acts to perform on the day and are keen for more performers to add their names to the line-up.

Katherine Harvey, one of the organisers, said: “We want it to be a big community event so we want local musicians to feel like they can be involved with this incredible event.

“We would really like people who are playing locally and who have a following locally to come forward and give us their time.”

Among the confirmed performers on the day is Panenka, a gypsy jazz band comprising seven friends from across north London and beyond.

The group, formed earlier this year, includes drummer Jamie Keats, 24, of Wadham Gardens, Swiss Cottage, violinist Hannah Bowers, 23, a former South Hampstead High School pupil, and singer Genevieve Schwartz, 23, a Highgate resident and former student at Fine Arts College in Hampstead.

Jamie, who is rehearsing regularly with the band for A Perfect Day, said: “We are very excited about playing the festival and we are hoping for a big crowd. Right now the band is a bit of fun but we are hoping to play some more events like A Perfect Day.”

Camden-based band The AutistiX, comprised of three autistic teenagers, will also play at next month’s festival.

The AutistiX band members Luke Steels, 17, Saul Zur-Szpiro, 21, and Jack Beavan-Duggan, 19, a former Swiss Cottage School pupil, performed at Hampstead Summer Festival and embarked on a tour of Spain last year.

They will be joined on the day by Ruben Alfred-Lecky, 18, and his brother Malachi, 15, known by their stage name Maverick & Malachi, who will also take to the stage at A Perfect Day.

Rapper Malachi and Ruben, aka Maverick, a beatboxer who provides the backing beats for his brother’s conscious rap, won Wandsworth Council’s 2014 Young Performer of the Year award in February.

In addition to performances from the musical acts, visitors to next month’s festival, which was attended by 20,000 people when it was last held in 2009, will be treated to a funfair, food stalls, and appearances from celebrities, including comedian Jimmy Carr, who lives locally.

A large number of acts and events are still to be announced.

A Perfect Day was held for the first time in 2006 and again in 2008 and 2009 but was then put on hold during the construction of the school’s new world-class facilities, which opened in October 2012.
