SWINE FLU has swept through a Hornsey Primary school and children's centre, forcing both to close for at least a week.

A child at the Campsbourne School and Children's Centre in Nightingale Lane, Hornsey, tested positive for the H1N1 virus this week.

It has been reported that a number of other pupils and teachers have fallen ill with vomiting, diarrhoea and a sore throat.

Eugenia Cronin, joint director of public health for NHS Haringey and Haringey Council said: "A child at the Campsbourne School has tested positive for the H1N1 virus (swine flu) and there are a number of other possible swine flu cases being investigated.

"Following advice from the Health Protection Agency (HPA), Campsbourne School has taken the decision to temporarily close as a precaution to help limit the spread of swine flu.

"The decision to close the school for a seven day period has been taken on the advice of an individual risk assessment by the HPA. Parents will be kept informed about re-opening. The school is working closely with the HPA to carry out appropriate action."

Only one other case of swine flu in Haringey has been officially diagnosed. A man spent 10 days at The Whittington Hospital in Magdala Avenue, Archway, in isolation and was released on Sunday, May 31.

Ms Cronin urged people to help prevent the spread of infection by using tissues to catch all sneezes, throwing used tissues away, and washing their hands regularly to kill the virus. Pupils at schools across Haringey who may have displayed flu-like symptoms have been urged to stay at home.
