The heatwave is set to come to an abrupt end tonight with thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast.

Heavy showers are expected to fall in the early hours of tomorrow morning leading the Met Office to issue a weather warning.

Flash flooding caused problems last weekend in parts of north London.

In Maida Vale, residents in Formosa Street were left counting the cost after their homes were flooded.

And in Golders Green, the north circular was flooded and some motorists had to be rescued by fire crews.

Meanwhile the capital has been on high alert as the soaring temperatures made it the hottest June on record.

The Department of Health issued a level three warning - the second-highest - as temperatures peaked at 32 degrees on Wednesday.

The weather is expected to cool tomorrow following the storms and the forecast for the weekend is a mixture of showers and sun.
