Writer and actress Meera Syal helped to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds towards a vital supported housing project.

Highgate resident Syal, star of sitcoms Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars at No. 42, was guest speaker at a charity dinner that brought in £700,000 for Kisharon, which supports hundreds of Jewish people with learning difficulties and their families.

The money from the gala, held at the Lancaster London, in Bayswater, will help the charity to fund new assisted living flats in Montpelier Rise, Golders Green, and the redevelopment of its Hanna Schwalbe residential home in nearby Leeside Crescent.

Chief executive Dr Beverley Jacobson said: “It is very exciting. We are modernising and expanding our facilities.”
