BUDDING artists came together at St Pancras as part of a national festival of drawing.

Students from around Camden and beyond were at the international train station last week for The Big Draw.

Visitors were invited to pick up pencils and use them to discover what makes the iconic station so great.

Expert drawers including Alastair Lansley, the architect who oversaw the station's successful redevelopment, encouraged families and young people to take a careful look at William Barlow's train shed and other wonders of the past and present before capturing them on paper.

Youngsters also tried out a sketching machine (pictured) made by the artist Balint Bolygo, who was there in person to give demonstrations.

"Twenty groups of primary and secondary pupils took part in a series of unusual study sessions," said a spokeswoman for the Campaign for Drawing, which has organised The Big Draw, supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering.

"They joined guided tours of the station led by science and engineering ambassadors before undertaking a project to imagine and design the stations of the future.

"The aim was to reveal the creativity and challenges of designing for construction and for a sustainable future and to highlight engineering as an exciting career choice."

For those who didn't manage to make it to St Pancras last week, a major event is also taking place at the British Library on Monday (October 27).

The Big Picture Party will welcome big names including Quentin Blake as people will have the chance to pick up tips and feel inspired.

The free event will be running from 11am to 4.30pm.
