A school playground in St John's Wood will be turned into a temporary car park for up to 100 vehicles per day after permission was granted to improve access to Lord's Cricket Ground during the Olympics.

The playground and car park area at Quintin Kynaston and George Eliot schools on Marlborough Hill will be used to create 48 Blue Badge disabled parking spaces and 49 ‘Games family’ parking spaces for officials, athletes and VIPs.

A shuttle bus will run between Lord’s and the schools every 15 minutes between 7.30am and 8.30pm while the archery competition is held at the cricket ground from July 27 to August 3.

Both schools will be on their summer holiday while the arrangement is in place.

A Westminster Council planning committee report, which granted permission for the temporary car park, stated: “Whilst the use of school playgrounds for parking is normally resisted in policy terms, there are considered to be exceptional circumstances to allow this use albeit for a very limited period.”
