Emmanuel Adebayor is hoping that his former club Arsenal will make one final slip-up on Sunday as the fight for third place comes to a head.

But the Tottenham striker is urging his team-mates to ignore the Gunners this weekend, and focus on their own task against Fulham.

Just one point separates Spurs and Arsenal ahead of Sunday’s Premier League climax, with Tottenham needing to beat the Cottagers, while hoping that Arsenal fail to do so at West Brom in order to steal third place.

Adebayor is aware that Spurs fans will be checking on the Gunners’ progress throughout Sunday’s showdown with Martin Jol’s Fulham at White Hart Lane – but he is warning his team-mates that they will be harshly punished if they take their eyes off the ball.

“We have to do everything it takes to win the last game, and we will see what happens from there,” the forward told Spurs TV.

“We have one more game to go before the holidays. We have to give it a proper go, and hopefully we will get what we deserve, which is to finish in the top four.

“Maybe Arsenal will drop points again at West Brom –playing away is going to be tough for them.

“But to be honest I think the most important thing is not to be looking at Arsenal on Sunday. We have to look at ourselves, otherwise we’ll regret what will happen.

“It’s the last game of the season, we’re fourth and we’re playing at home. I don’t think we can have a better position than that.

“It’s going to be an amazing game. Hopefully the fans will be there to support us and we can get what we deserve.”

Tottenham could have gone into the final weekend ahead of Arsenal after the Gunners’ surprise 3-3 draw with Norwich at the Emirates on Saturday.

That gave Harry Redknapp’s side a golden opportunity to leapfrog their north London rivals into third place with a win at Aston Villa.

But, having gone into half-time 1-0 down, and then been reduced to 10 men after Danny Rose’s dismissal, Spurs were only able to salvage a 1-1 draw.

However, that point still means that the Lilywhites can steal third spot on the final day if they better Arsenal’s result – and Adebayor says he was fully aware of the significance of his equalising penalty at Villa Park.

“I knew how important it was before taking it,” he said. “I’ve had the chance to play for some big clubs in my career, and I knew the calculation before I stepped up to take it – before I even stepped out onto the pitch.

“I knew there was a lot of pressure on that penalty but I’ve been playing for a few years now.

“I just told myself ‘you can do it. Keep calm, take the ball and do your thing. If the keeper saves it then good for him, but if you score then good for you’. I think I took it quite well and we’re fairly happy now.

“Before going to Aston Villa we knew that it was going to be a tough one. We needed to win there, they needed to win as well to keep themselves safe from relegation, and it was a fantastic game.

“We’re happy with the way we played in the second half. We showed our strength and showed what we can do on the football pitch. We played together, we worked hard for the team and in the end we went home with one point.

“We drew and, to be honest, for the first time I can say that I’m not disappointed with that.”
