Spurs Ladies start their Capital Women’s Senior Cup campaign on Sunday – and goalkeeper Toni-Anne Wayne says the squad is determined to win the trophy this time after losing last season’s final.

Tottenham won silverware in two competitions last term, lifting both the Ryman Cup and FA Women’s Premier League Cup – but they were runners-up in the Senior Cup after a 3-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic at Wingate & Finchley’s stadium.

The Lilywhites will be big favourites to clear the first hurdle of this year’s competition – while they are away from home, Karen Hills’ side sit three divisions above their hosts and are unbeaten in the Women’s Premier League Southern Division, having won five of their six fixtures and drawn the other.

However, Wayne says she and her team-mates will be taking no chances and will be keeping their eyes firmly on the prize.

“Last season we were gutted not to win this cup, it was the only one that evaded us,” she said. “We’ve aimed to try and win as much as we can this season and the squad will be anxious to get off to a good start on Sunday.

“Just because we’re in a higher league doesn’t mean this will be a walkover. We’re expecting a hard game and the longer the game goes on at 0-0 it will give Carshalton more confidence. We need to make sure we start fast and try to get them on the back foot from the start.

“[Our belief] is a huge thing for us this year. There’s not one game in our league that you’re going to cruise through and to be able to stay on top – you have to believe that you can win even when you’re not playing well.

“Against QPR [last Wednesday] we played some brilliant attacking football and dominated the game. We knew that if we kept being patient and plugging away we could get a goal and I think we showed that the main thing we’ve improved on so far this season is our mental strength.

“We realise there’s a huge amount of the season left to play, but the team has great team spirit and we don’t intend to let our focus shift. We always want to improve in every session, every game and we have the right group of players and staff to do that.”

Spurs’ defensive record has been a key factor in their impressive start to the season, and Wayne has only been beaten twice in her six appearances.

“We have two amazing goalkeeper coaches in Aaron Tilbrook and Luke Sheldrick and they have stepped up their sessions again this year,” said Tottenham’s No1.

“We’ve been doing a lot of running and high-intensity training. Most sessions we’re diving on the floor and I think that’s really helped in our games.

“We have four fantastic goalkeepers and any one of them could easily play in this league so the competition is so high, and I feel that’s really helped to up my game.

“We’ve also had a few additions in the defence this year, which has also increased competition, so everyone has upped their game and I think that’s shown with how well we have defended.”
