Spurs defender Steven Caulker believes that new signing Gylfi Sigurdsson will be a big hit at White Hart Lane after their spell together at Swansea last season.

Sigurdsson arrived in the Premier League from German outfit Hoffenheim in January and spent the second half of the last campaign with the Swans, where he played with Caulker, who was on loan from Tottenham.

The pair were two of the Welsh outfit’s brightest stars as Brendan Rodgers’ side finished 11th in their first season in England’s top flight.

Now they are together again at Tottenham, following 22-year-old Sigurdsson’s 8million move to north London – and Caulker is delighted to be reunited with his former team-mate, both on the pitch and in the dressing-room.

“He’s a fantastic player, and he’s also a great guy off the pitch,” Caulker told Spurs TV. “He’s humble, he’s always the last one off the pitch and he’s someone who always works hard.

“I think he’ll bring a lot to the team. He can shoot with both feet and he’s obviously a threat going forward.

“He’s got a lot about him. I won’t give him too much credit on his banter, but he’s a good guy and he’ll add to the squad.”

Caulker is also held in the highest regard by the Tottenham hierarchy and, having proved himself in the Premier League last season, he signed a new four-year contract last week.

“It’s fantastic,” said the 20-year-old. “I enjoyed my loan spell last year at Swansea. I’m back at Spurs now and this is where I want to be, so to get offered a new deal is something that I’m obviously proud of. I’m looking forward to it, there are exciting times ahead.

“I’d definitely say it means more to me because I’ve come through the youth ranks. I’ve been here since I was 15, I’ve worked my way through and hopefully this is the year I get my opportunity, and now it’s down to me to take it.

“The club’s supported me for the last four or five years and that would be a nice way to repay them. Everything’s going to be fresh this year and I hope we can have another good season, similar to the last.

“Even last year I thought Tottenham were playing a great style of football, a passing game which is great to watch, and they were one of the most exciting teams last season. To be part of that this year is something that I relish. These are exciting times for me and the club.”

Caulker’s potential has also been underlined by his selection for the Great Britain football squad as he eyes an Olympic campaign alongside the likes of Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy and his fellow Spurs youngster Danny Rose.

“It’s something I’m proud of, and likewise my family. I relish the challenge,” said Caulker. “I know it’s not going to be easy. We’re going with a strong squad but we’re up against the likes of Senegal and if we get through there [the group] then you’ve got Brazil and teams like that.

“It’s going to be a challenge but if we can get a medal around our necks it would be fantastic for the UK, and on a personal note.

“It’s something I wouldn’t have imagined as a kid. You think about the World Cup and the Euros, but to have an Olympic medal on your CV would be something to look back on for many years.

“It’s a huge opportunity, especially with players like Giggs and Bellamy in the squad. It’s going to be a massive tournament.”

Rose, however, admits he has mixed feelings about being involved in the Olympics while Andre Villas-Boas is surveying his new players in pre-season.

“It’s a great achievement being here [with the Great Britain squad], but at the same time there’s a new manager at Spurs and all the lads will be making impressions on him while me and Steve will be here – but I am delighted about being part of this,” said Rose.
