A specialist programme to help older drinkers is set to launch in Westminster.

Charity Foundation66 will provide specialist counselling for over-55s in danger of developing drinking problems.

On Friday (October 12) it emerged drinkers in the 55-74 age bracket cost the NHS 825million per year in treatment – 12 times more than those aged 16-24.

Cllr Rachael Robathan, Westminster Council cabinet member for adults and health said: “The national trend is that alcohol misuse among older people is rising, and this has a significant effect on NHS costs.

“This service is not there to lecture or tell people how to live their lives, but to suggest healthier options.”
