Hornsey’s new overseas player Sean Solia starred with both bat and ball on his debut as the Crouch End club beat Wembley by 48 runs in Division Two of the Middlesex County Cricket League.
Solia hit 63 while Ed Wharton notched 41 as the hosts declared on 193-6 after 50 overs at Tivoli Road – and the Kiwi then took 3-46 as the visitors were skittled for 145 in the 38th over.
Wharton, Martin Tucker and Steve Atkinson provided Solia with ample support and the only downside for Hornsey was a hamstring injury to spinner Bhasker Patel, who is now a doubt for Saturday’s game away to Acton.
“We didn’t want to bat more than 50 overs and ideally we wanted to get to 210 or 220, but we backed ourselves to defend the total we got,” said Hornsey club captain Chetan Patel.
“We bowled well, created pressure and, although Wembley kept up with the run-rate, they kept losing wickets. It’s the start we wanted, now we need to crack on.”
