The blaze broke out in a second floor flat in Mansfield Road damaging a second flat on the third and fourth floors.

Eight fire engines from stations including Kentish Town attended after being called at 8.55pm.

People in hallways and stairwells were evacuated whilst others unaffected by the smoke and heat were told to remain in their homes.

One man was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

Station manager Wayne Johnson said: “It is incidents like this which show how important it is to know what to do in the event of a fire, especially if you live in a flat.

“If there is a fire in your building while you are inside your flat or maisonette, and you’re not affected by it stay put and call 999.

“There is lots of advice on our website explaining what to do in a fire. I would urge everyone to fit smoke alarms and test them regularly.”

The flames were brought under control by 9.34pm.

The fire brigade received around 30 calls to their 999 control room about the fire the cause of which is still unknown.
