ALL but one of the seven post offices in Haringey which were earmarked for closure will be axed, Post Office Ltd announced yesterday

ALL but one of the seven post offices in Haringey which were earmarked for closure will be axed, Post Office Ltd announced yesterday.

Post offices in Alexandra Park Road, Muswell Hill; Weston Park in Hornsey; Ferme Park Road, in Stroud Green; Salisbury Road in Wood Green and West Green Road in Tottenham will all close.

Page Green in Broad Lane in south Tottenham has been saved because of the high level of sheltered and temporary accommodation in the area as well as the planned housing development in the Tottenham Hale, Post Office Ltd said.

Highgate post office, which is in the neighbouring borough of Camden, is also facing the axe.

Post Office bosses told Shabi and Rafiqul Islam, the owners of the Alexandra Park Road, the bad news by telephone last Friday.

Mrs Islam said: "I'm devastated. It's the customers who will suffer. We did everything we could to fight the planned closure but the government was determined to do this."

The decision by Post Office Ltd to axe all but one of the post offices earmarked for closure has raised questions over the legitimacy of its six week consultation programme, which ended on April 2.

Lynne Featherstone, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, said: "This is just beyond belief. All our efforts and campaigning counted for nothing.

"Gordon Brown said he would listen to the electorate after Labour's appalling election results last week. Well if he had listened he would have scrapped this policy."

Anita Turner, Post Office Ltd's Network Development Manager for London, said: "These are difficult decisions which have not been taken lightly. We have considered very carefully all the comments made during the public consultation.

"We believe that the amended plan announced today, offers our customers in London the best prospect for a sustainable network in the future, bearing in mind the government's minimum access criteria and the other factors the government has asked us to consider."

Under the plan, 155 branches will close in London with the first closures taking place in June this year.
