FRESH calls have been made for more eyes in the sky to monitor Muswell Hill after two security guards were attacked in broad daylight.

In separate incidents, robbers stole cash boxes from Group 4 Security drivers picking up cash.

Residents and police teams have been clamouring for CCTV cameras after a spate of similar robberies last year.

A review of the current provision carried out in January was highly critical and Haringey Council promised to make changes but has so far failed to act.

Chairman of the Muswell Hill and Fortis Green Association John Hajdu said: "Here is another example of CCTV not being available. We have been fighting for this for over two years - they can't catch the people who are doing these robberies because there is no proper coverage."

In the first incident last Thursday a delivery driver for Group 4 was collecting money from HSBC on the Broadway at around 2.30pm when he was violently pushed as he was returning to his van.

His attacker was a 5ft 5ins black man in his 30s, wearing a grey hooded jumper and blue jeans.

He picked up the box and ran off towards Hillfield Park where he got into a green Ford Mondeo car being driven by an accomplice of eastern European appearance.

They drove down Hillfield Park and back onto the Broadway before speeding off down Colney Hatch Lane.

It is the second time the bank has been targeted but the lack of cameras along the Broadway makes it easier for the thieves to escape without being caught.

On Monday lunchtime, a female driver was collecting cash from the Odeon cinema on Fortis Green Road when a similar looking man grabbed her and took the security cash box before running away towards the Broadway.

DC James Mess from Haringey Flying Squad said: "It's been quite quiet in recent months but there are still teams of these people operating in the area.

"We have made some inroads into catching them out and we would urge any witnesses to contact us.

"It would make our job easier if there were more cameras in the area."

Safer Neighbourhoods boss Sgt Dave Bird said the quality of CCTV provision is much poorer in the west of Haringey than in the east.

He said: "At this end of the borough there are not enough cameras and the quality of the images is poor. I would strongly support any initiative to bring CCTV provision up to scratch as soon as possible."

A council spokesman said: "We are intending to install two additional cameras in Muswell Hill as well as using the existing traffic management cameras for crime detection and prevention during times most prone to incidents of this type."

Anyone with information about either incident should contact DC Mess on 020-8358 1855 or, to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
