Hampstead Museum in Burgh House is staging an exhibition which celebrates 100 years of Scouting in Hampstead. It opens on Wednesday July 23 and runs until October 19.
The 1st Hampstead Scout Troop, founded in 1908, was one of the very earliest Scout Troops formed in the UK. Its flag is one of the museum's most popular artefacts. A large number of other early scouting objects are on display in this new exhibition, including log books, uniforms, photographs, and other memorabilia. There are also objects on loan from the Scout Archive and local scout groups. In 1983 a very popular exhibition was mounted to mark 75 years of local scouting and this exhibition brings the history up to date.
The exhibition has lots to offer local Scout and Girl Guide groups and other children, As well as the older material there is material related to scouting today - posters, flags, photographs, even a tent. There are quizzes, trails and competitions, and activities suitable for younger children.
