I first heard of the major development at Central Square, Hampstead Garden Suburb, in the middle of last month through a friend who lives in Southwood Court.
He thought that, as an architect who has resided on the Suburb since 1960, it might be of interest to me.
I support Douglas Blausten (H&H letters, September 18) on his complaint of the school's lack of consultation with, and presentation to, the wider residents of the Suburb.
Past proposals on this most important site have always been subject to public exhibition and wide debate.
In May this year the school only consulted with immediate neighbours. A mere 12, yes 12, residents turned up for the presentation!
I do not think that those who supported the proposal understood the importance and effect of the development not only to Central Square and to the adjoining roads, Northway and Southway, but to the Suburb itself.

Two six-metre (20 feet) high buildings are to be constructed three metres (10 feet) in from the pavement to both Northway and Southway. They will also be visible from Central Square.
Unfortunately, as far as I can ascertain, there were no three- dimensional drawings showing the effect these imposing buildings would have on the street scene, to these two roads and to the Square.
If Barnet approve these proposals at their meeting we have no way back from a development which will greatly affect the centre of the Suburb forever.
