League tables comparing the GCSE and A-Level performance of secondary schools across Camden, Haringey and Barnet during last summer’s exams were published today.

The average GCSE results in each borough rose in comparison with last year’s marks, the new Department for Education figures show.

All three boroughs surpassed the national average for pupils attaining five GCSEs at A* to C including in English and maths, which was 59.2 per cent across England.

The corresponding figure was 60.4 per cent in Camden, 63.5 per cent in Haringey, and in Barnet some 71.5 of pupils reached the benchmark.

Fee-paying University College School (UCS) in Frognal, Hampstead, topped the pile in GCSEs, as the only school where 100 per cent of pupils attained at least five A* to C grades including English and maths. Its results were among the top 100 in England.

Henrietta Barnett School in Central Square, Hampstead Garden Suburb, topped the list of state-funded schools with 98 per cent of students reaching the target.

It came third overall behind UCS and independent all-girls Channing School in The Bank, Highgate, where the figure was 99 per cent.

Camden School for Girls in Sandall Road, Camden Town, was the second-best performing state school and also saw the biggest improvement of all, with 81 per cent of girls hitting the target, a 17 per cent rise compared with last year’s rate of 64 per cent.

Haverstock School in Haverstock Hill, Chalk Farm, also made big strides, rising from 48 to 58 per cent.

At the other end of the scale, less than half of the pupils at two schools managed five A* to C grades with English and maths.

Forty-five per cent of pupils met the target at both William Ellis in Highgate Road and Regent High School in Charrington Street, Somers Town. That was after an 11 per cent drop at William Ellis and a 17 per cent at Regent High School compared with last year.

The highest scoring school for A-Levels, according to the “average points score” measure, was Henrietta Barnett, followed by independent schools South Hampstead High School in Maresfield Gardens, Swiss Cottage, Channing School and Highgate School in North Road, Highgate, and UCS.
