Arsene Wenger said the returning Cesc Fabregas brought "calm and confidence" to Arsenal after he made his first competitive start of the season in Wednesday's 4-0 beating of FC Twente.

Victory over Steve McClaren's side - 6-0 on aggregate - put the Gunners in the hat for today's draw for the group stages of the Champions League.

"Cesc could have stayed on, he always wants to play, but he was probably more disappointed that they (Twente) did not have a go at us," said Wenger.

"He brings calm and confidence to the side and overall we had a good balance in the side."

Fabregas slotted straight back in after recovering from a hamstring strain and if there is no reaction in training this morning will play against Newcastle United at Emirates tomorrow teatime.

The manner of the win, courtesy of goals from Samir Nasri, William Gallas, Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner, was welcome after last week's limp 1-0 loss at Fulham.

"It was a big mental test. The response was clear - togetherness, focus and efficiency," said the manager.

"The whole team was sharper and physically much better than on Saturday and that is why it made it easier."

Wenger hopes to add at least one new player to his squad before the transfer window closes on Monday night - but it is proving difficult.

He said: "You can see many transfers announced in the media every day - but it takes a lot of time and does not always happen.
