If you wander down to Primrose Hill you can often spy a celebrity or two sipping coffee in one of the independent cafes or walking a dog in the park.

Last weekend, however, the area was awash with famous faces at Saturday’s Pup Aid dog show and at Sunday’s Primrose Hill Summer Festival.

The dog show raised awareness of the cruel practice of puppy farming.

Host of Britain’s Next Top Model, Elle Macpherson, joined footballer Peter Crouch and his wife, underwear model Abbey Clancy, TV presenter Lizzie Cundy and “Queen of Shops” Mary Portas to watch the dog show in Primrose Hill park, held in support of the Pud Aid charity.

Founded by TV vet Marc Abraham, Pup Aid raises awareness and money in an attempt stop puppy farming, where dogs are bred in dark, dank conditions and often left with incurable and infectious diseases.

The charity has won the support of comedian Ricky Gervais, Queen guitarist Brian May and Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher.

Mr Abraham said: “When I founded Pup Aid, what I had in mind was to send out a message to people who had made the mistake of buying a puppy [from a puppy farm] without knowing.

“We’re promoting responsible breeding and my mission was to use celebrities to carry through that responsibility.

“This year’s show was the best ever with more awareness raised and fantastic celebrities turning up. I’m thrilled.”

Model David Gandy, TV presenter Gail Porter and ex-wife of Noel Gallagher, Meg Matthews, judged three of the 12 categories in which pups were up for prizes, including most stylish pooch, dog that looks most like a celeb and most handsome dog.

Zoe, an ex-breeding chocolate Labrador bitch who had been beaten, tied up and kept alive only to breed, won Best in Show, taking home a basket of tasty treats and toys.

This year the show hoped to raise awareness of its e-petition, which has already gained 70,000 signatures in three months.

It needs 100,000 names to be able to get puppy farming debated in Parliament.

Just minutes away from the park, more glamorous figures were braving the drizzle to browse the numerous stalls at Primrose Hill Summer Festival, including model Daisy Lowe.

There was also live music, fairground rides and games.
