A public memorial service for the Nobel prize-winning author Doris Lessing will be held at St. Martin-in-the-Fields church in Trafalgar Square on Monday, April 7.

Ms Lessing, who lived in Gondar Gardens, West Hampstead, died in November aged 94.

The service, starting at 3pm, will see four speakers talk about different aspects of her life.

They are writer Jenny Diski, who was taken in by Ms Lessing at a young age, academic and novelist Christopher Bigsby, playwright and screenwriter Julian Mitchell, and writer and biographer Dame Hermione Lee.

There will also be two readings from Ms Lessing’s works by the actors Miranda Richardson and Anna Chancellor.

The memorial will feature a collection in the author’s memory, with proceeds going to Booktrust and the Africa Book Development Organisation.
