Staff members and protestors stood side by side and raised their arms in solidarity as Swiss Cottage Post Office closed for the last time today.

Despite campaigners fighting for more than a year to save the Finchley Road post office, the post office moved into a nearby WH Smith branch, also in Finchley Road, tomorrow.

It was one of 16 main branches across the UK to be transferred into a WH Smith.

Labour Cllr Tulip Siddiq, cabinet member for culture at Camden Council, joined a large group of demonstrators outside the Swiss Cottage Post Office before it closed at 5.30pm.

All eight members of staff, who have a combined total of 185 years experience, declined to transfer to the WH Smith branch, according to spokesman Gary Watt of the Communication Workers Union.

They have been redeployed to other branches or taken voluntary redundancy.

A petition against the closure gained more than 1,500 signatures.
