A NEW swimming pool and primary school will be built in King's Cross if a developer's plans are given the green light.

Bosses at Argent Ltd, the company charged with regenerating King's Cross Central, also want to build a doctor's surgery, children's centre and a cross-river tram system on the 67-acre site.

The final plans will be put to the public on Monday as part of a six-week consultation across Camden and Islington.

With additional plans for 650 student flats, social housing, wind turbines and green roofs, Argent Ltd is confident the scheme will get the go-ahead.

Chief executive Roger Madelin said: "We've done a lot more work on the public realm aspects of our plans. This has led to an increase in open space.

"We've added a new park on the east of the development, created home zones and come up with a great solution for gas holder number eight.

"We will provide more homes than our original proposals. There will be a range of affordable housing - social housing and intermediate housing, both rented and for sale."

Three Victorian-era gasholders, which campaigners have battled to save, will be re-erected on the site. Two of them will be turned into homes and the third will be transformed into a sports centre.

The public consultation on the plans will end on November 21. Argent Ltd says it will push Camden Council and Islington Council to give the scheme the green light as soon as possible.
