SHOCKED pedestrians rushed to the aid of a man who was hit by a van on a stretch of road dubbed the Hampstead 'racetrack' on Monday (June 2).

The collision happened at an accident blackspot on the school run in Fitzjohn's Avenue. It is a stretch where campaigners have called for years to have traffic calming measures.

The 38-year-old victim was hit just before 1.45pm on the zebra crossing and at first it was feared his injuries would prove life threatening. Later it was confirmed he had suffered head and hip injuries, but survived.

Farokh Khorooshi, chairman of the Fitzjohn's Avenue Residents Association, said the situation has reached desperate levels.

"This is just one of many accidents we've had in the last few years," he said. "This is a school run and I'm really worried about the children who have to cross the road. This happened around lunchtime and it's just lucky there weren't any children crossing at the same time.

"We need to give parents a sense of security that their children can walk to school without getting hurt."

Earlier this year it emerged that a vehicle was clocked travelling at 159mph down the road at 2.30am one morning. The vehicle was caught by the speed sign which flashes at cars travelling over the 30mph limit.
