Within days of Margaret Thatcher’s death in April, Finchley and Golders Green MP Mike Freer was leading calls for a street in the Iron Lady’s old constituency to be renamed in her memory.

However, reports last week carried news to break the hearts of Tory loyalists from Golders Green to Friern Barnet – plans for a Margaret Thatcher Road had hit a “dead end”.

It was reported that Barnet Council – the authority in charge of changing road names – had received no applications to honour the former PM and so, it was presumed, the Maggie Avenue plans had gone stale.

Baffled by the news, Heathman decided to call Mr Freer to find out what had gone wrong but, on the contrary, he insisted there was no need for Thatcher fans to lose any sleep.

“These things grind on slowly,” he explained. “Certainly Richard Cornelius (Barnet Council leader) is still supportive but at the moment they’ve got a couple of other big projects on the go – like One Barnet.

“I haven’t given up on it and I don’t think the leader has either. I’ll give them my ideas when they are ready for them.”
