‘Our Pomeranian dog died after being bitten by wealthy property developer’s Alsatian’

A Hampstead family claim their beloved Pomeranian dog Chewy died after being bitten by a neighbour’s Alsatian dog.

Emily Eringer, said Chewy was at her parents home in Redington Road when they heard him scream from the neighbouring garden belonging to property developer Laurence Kirschel

She said: “My mother heard our dog scream and realised he was in next door’s garden. There is a hole in the fence. She ran around to Mr Kirschel’s house to get Chewy.”

Mr Kirschel brought the dog out to them with a bandage and advised them to take him to the vet.

He denies that Chewy was bitten by his dog but that he found the Pomeranian in a bramble bush.

The family called the vet and they took Chewy straight over to Village Vet in Belsize Park.

Chewy later died of internal bleeding and cardiac arrest.

The vet’s report, seen by the Ham&High said: “Dog bite presented severe shock collapse and unresponsive.”

It summarised: “Further severe haemorrhage continued and led to cardiac arrest.”

It describes “a massive active haemorrhage from puncture wound to caudal thorax.”

Emily, whose daughter Angelina, two, adores the Pomeranian, said: “We bought Chewy for my mother. He was a family dog and we are all devastated. Luckily Angelina was not there at the time. She keeps asking ‘where’s chewy?’I told her he’s gone, the big dog hurt him and he’s not coming back. She understands but she keeps forgetting and asking for him.”

Emily said her mother Vesna had raised concerns with Mr Kirschel about the Alsatians.

Mr Kirschel told the Ham&High that as soon as he was told that Chewy was missing he searched his garden for him.

“I found him in the brambles and covered in Mulch.” He cleaned him and bandaged him and then took him out.

“It is simply not true that my dogs savaged their dog.

“I have CCTV that shows clearly that Chewy ran into my garden and that the dogs were all playing together. You cannot see any biting, just dogs playing. The puncture wound could have come from the fence or brambles. I would expect a dog bite to result in external bleeding and there was no blood from the wound.

“It is very sad that their dog died but it is not a case of being savaged by my dogs. They are not guard dogs, they are family dogs. I have six children in my house. My neighbour also has several dogs and they do bark at each other.

“The fact is Chewy came into my garden and CCTV shows the dogs were all playing together.”

He said there was no evidence of any attack.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Police were called at approximately 14,20pm on Sunday, September 18, to reports of a dog attack at an address in West Heath Road, NW3. A dog, a Pomeranian, died.”

Police enquiries are continuing and there have been no arrests.
