Disability campaigner, Olympic torchbearer and Shepherd’s Hill resident Pamela Moffatt has died at the age of 80.

She was born in St Albans, Hertfordshire on Christmas Day 1937, and grew up in Harpenden. Pamela loved the open air and countryside. One of her greatest regrets was that her disability (muscular dystrophy) restricted her access to these sources of enjoyment.

After finishing at St Albans High School for Girls she took a course in Institutional Management and then trained as a dietitian.

She started work as a dietitian at the former Royal Northern Hospital in Holloway, where she stayed until her disability compelled her to retire in the mid 1970s.

While working she moved into a flat in Shepherds Hill, at first on her own and later with the support of carers. She always kept a colourful display of flowers on her balcony, took an interest in the communal garden, and was famous for keeping the gardeners up to the mark.

When she retired, Pamela started a new career in voluntary work in support of disabled and older people and well as campaigning for easier access to buildings and transport.

She also chaired London’s Advisory Panel on Accessible Transport. Her dedication was recognised in 1997 when she was awarded an MBE for “services to the mobility of disabled people”.

In 2012 she was chosen by a public nomination as “an inspirational campaigner for older and disabled people”, to be one of the torchbearers of the Olympic flame.

She was involved with many organisations including Age Concern Haringey, Haringey Disability Consortium, the Dial-a-Ride, Islington Stroke Club, Haringey Forum for Older People and Hornsey Pensioners Action Group.

The worked with the Care Quality Commission, was a lay member of an NHS Clinical Commissioning Group and was co-opted onto Haringey Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

Pamela led an active cultural life, and loved the theatre, concerts, opera and ballet. When Crouch End and District U3A was set up, she organised a book group.

Everyone who knew Pamela was impressed by her courage and the strength of her personality, and her determination not to let her disability prevent her from living live to the full.

Her achievements were remarkable.

Pamela’s funeral will take place at Islington Crematorium, 278 High Road in East Finchley on Friday June 29 at 1.15pm.

Her family have asked for family flowers only, and for people to make donations to Muscular Dystrophy UK or The Woodland Trust.

Pamela Moffatt MBE died aged 80 on Friday June 8.
