NORMALLY the provision of extra educational places at primary school level would be a cause for celebration, but the sound of popping champagne corks has been notably absent in the wake of Haringey's approval of the Coleridge expansion.
The lack of a celebratory spirit says a great deal. The 'super-sizing' of Coleridge to almost 1,000 places in two different buildings, divided by one of the busiest roads in the borough, has been greeted with an unusual degree of concern and apprehension. We may not yet have heard the last of it.
It is now down to the supporters of the expansion to prove that they were right. The last thing anyone wants is for the school's academic performance to deteriorate, or for the safety of its young pupils to be compromised.
