Campbell, 35, is a free agent and has already had an offer to join Celtic, and now Magpies boss Chris Hughton is interested in being reunited with the player he helped bring through the ranks at Tottenham.
Campbell's preference is to stay at Arsenal after his successful return in January, but he is waiting to hear if Wenger will offer him a one-year deal
